Travel Planning for NRI IVF

Organizing your fertility treatment from another country can be daunting. We at Ekmi Fertility annually support hundreds of NRI on their IVF journey. Here’s what you need to know before you book that flight.

Timeline: How Far Ahead Should You Plan?

The length of your stay depends on your treatment plan. Most NRI patients need:

IVF Cycle: 18-21 days minimum

Egg Freezing: 12-14 days

Embryo Transfer: 5-7 days (from the embryos creation)

Initial Consultation: 2-3 days

Build in buffer time. Planes get delayed and bodies do not keep precise schedules when it comes to hormonal treatments.

Pre-Travel Coordination with Ekmi Fertility

Begin to plan 2-3 months before you want to go. We’ll help you:

Managing Work and Logistics

There are two easy ways most NRI patients get around this. Others take the entire duration off work. During the monitoring phase, others work remotely because early appointments are fast. The first part, the stimulation phase, entails a daily clinic visit – but appointments are usually in the morning.

Partner must attend on day of egg recovery and production/procurement, for all other appointments partner could be flexible with times.

Costs Involved with NRI IVF Planning

Add in these costs over and above the cost of treatment:

Accommodation (short-stay apartments near clinic is ideal)

Local transportation

Meals and daily expenses

Extended stay contingencies

Post-transfer rest period before flying

Ekmi Fertility may be able to help you find accommodation partners that have special offers for our patients.

Post-Treatment Travel Guidelines

Nothing earlier than around 2-3 days post embryo transfer for flying. Some doctors recommend 5 days. Risk of DVT increases with long haul flight, especially post-hormonal therapy. Hydrate, move a lot, wear compression stockings.

Your pregnancy test occurs at 12-14 days following transfer. You can wait around for results, or you could go home and link up with a doctor in your community to check on you while you’re under.
