A transfer room silence of its own kind. It’s not empty – it’s full. All enfolded by everything the intended parents have gone through the failed cycles, the long conversations, the paperwork, the waiting. We’ve been in that room hundreds of times here at Ekmi Fertility, and we never take it for granted.
Embryo transfer is where IVF and surrogacy intersect. The fertility specialist uses the intended parents’ genetic material – or that of their donors – to create one or more embryos via IVF, then carefully places the embryo into the surrogate’s uterus. It’s one procedure. But it has the weight of a whole journey.
How the Embryo Gets There
The medical team lays so much groundwork before any transfer even takes place.
- The embryologist fertilises the retrieved eggs through ICSI to form embryos
- Embryos are grown in vitro for 3-5 days with grading performed
- The highest graded embryo (or embryos) is chosen for transfer
- Hormonal medication of the surrogacy mother’s uterine lining
- When the lining is thick enough (around 8mm or greater) transfer will be some point
Every single variable is monitored by your fertility specialist. Nothing is rushed. At Ekmi Fertility, we believe the transfer day should be earned – not just scheduled.
The Role of the Surrogacy Mother In This Step
This is where the surrogacy mother comes in and displays a most active role. For weeks she has been prepping her body – with meds, monitoring appointments, and you are trusting the process too.
What her preparation involves:
- Estrogen supplements that thicken the uterine lining
- Progesterone support-initiated days prior to transfer
- Frequent ultrasounds to check the lining status
- A false transfer cycle, in many cases, to accurately map out the uterus

She’s not just a vessel. She is someone who has elected to take this responsibility carefully. So, the best surrogacy clinic will treat her wellbeing as equally important as anything.
On the Day of Transfer
The actual procedure is about 15-20 minutes long. The doctor performs the transfer without anaesthesia, guiding it precisely with ultrasound – most surrogate mothers rate it as only mildly uncomfortable at worst. The embryologist loads the embryo into a thin pipette, and the doctor carefully guides it into the uterus.
Then the waiting begins. A beta-hCG pregnancy test is carried out 10-14 days later. Those 10 to 14 days in the middle is frequently the most difficult stretch of the whole process for planned parents. We know that. Our team stays close.
